Hi Mamas!

As you ladies know, I am a lover of art. One of my goals with the The Charlotte Moms Blog is to share my love of art, but also introduce you to local Charlotte Artists. Today, I want to introduce you to a native Charlottean, artist, and one of my closest friends, Melissa Hickok.

Melissa Hickok of Inner Child Art Studio

I met Melissa while attending Northwest School of the Arts as high school juniors. I am not going to disclose how many years ago that was. We were both “cool” teenagers that shared a love for art and hair dye. Melissa has always been one of my biggest supporters and really encouraged me to start Paper & Fox. After our high school shenanigans, Melissa continued her art education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington where she received a BA in Studio Art. She is an experienced teacher that has taught with CMS and local photography and pottery studios. I have had the pleasure of watching Melissa follow her passion and start Inner Child Art Studio. I think she is someone you ladies would love to meet.

Melissa came up with the idea of painting ultrasound images in 2005. Here is how it started – Melissa’s close friend was expecting her first child and Melissa had been hunting for a special gift for the soon-to-be Mama. After coming up frustrated and empty-handed, she had the brilliant idea to paint the ultrasound image. Ta-da! This was the beginning (or birth) of Inner Child Art Studio.

With both of my pregnancies, I counted down the days to the ultrasound appointment. I know you ladies did this too! I remember carrying the thin papered sonogram image in my purse and would look at it every chance I had. Inner Child Art Studio takes that special moment of bonding and transforms it into a lasting memory in the form of original art.

In 2008 while pregnant with my first son, Knox, Melissa surprised me with a priceless gift of an ultrasound painting. It totally brought me to tears. Here is my ultrasound and the painting that she did for me.

The painting (below) is above Knox’s crib and yes, we had a “Space Cowboy” themed nursery.

After developing the idea of sonogram paintings, Melissa became interested in the various ways one sonogram image could be translated. She has been successful at tailoring the painting process to meet the aesthetic of the parents and nursery design.

Here are some of my favorite Inner Child Art Studio Paintings:

Here is another ultrasound and the painting that was created from the image.

So, before you print off a guest registry at Target, think about giving a gift that is personal and a lifetime keepsake for the parents and the child. Melissa works with two and three-dimensional sonograms and has various price points.

Thanks, Carmody
